Fresh snow in quick settlement, loads at high altitude, increasing temperatures |

The avalanche hazard is 3-considerable in Valgrisenche, in the Valleys of Gran Paradiso, Champorcher and Lys Valleys and in the heads of Valtournenche and Ayas, 2-moderate increasing to 3-considerable during the day elsewhere.
The avalanche problems are:
new snow and wind-drifted at high altitude
In areas with 3-considerable above 2600-2800 m are present large quantities of fresh snow in quick settlement and widespread little visible loads, thick and large.
Possible triggering of surface slabs even of medium size, it is the spontaneous passage of a single skier, Mainly on steep slopes from the slopes between west, north and northeast. In back-country activities requires a good local evaluation of the danger.
Elsewhere in the region any slab avalanches are lower thicknesses, but are still widespread on many slopes.

Wet snow
The last snow is wet and only in the morning is well frozen, and the inner layers are strongly humidified up to 2700-2800 m.
The sun increases the surface instability and causes an intensification of the natural release up to 3000-3200 m with surface release of wet snow, small and medium size, at all aspects (to the south, below 2700 m, also to the ground) .
A hiker / skier can already trigger small heavy snow avalanches, especially from 2700-2800 m in the hottest hours. Remember that it is better to finish early hikes.

Snow pack and weather.
Since last Friday have followed a series of snowfall that affected the whole region. The greatest amounts of snow were measured in neighboring valleys with Piedmont, particularly have concentrated in the heads of the valley.
In total at 2400-2700 m
- 100-130 cm in the Val di Rhemes and Valsavarenche, 80-100 cm in the high valleys of Cogne, Valgrisenche, 100-120 cm in the high valleys of Champorcher, Gressoney and Valtournenche, 40-60 cm in the rest of the valley.
-under the 2200-2300 m much less, from 30 to 60 cm, which quickly fall down further, to 1700 to 1800 m altitude (snow level).
Thanks to the sun, the spring sunshine, and the cloudy night coverage, the recent and fresh snow is turning into wet snow and reduces the thickness (settlements up to 30-40 cm). Currently under 2700-2800 m is heavy, while the old snowpack is wet throughout its thickness. beautiful snow only in high altitudes and colder exposures.
Last night good refreeze just above 2000-2200 m where no found cloud cover.
Avalanches activity.
Between 2800 and 3500 m reported numerous spontaneous slab avalanches and loose, dusty, dry, from very steep slopes close to the ridges or near of rock bands. Soft slabs triggerred to the passage of a single skier with detachments of limited thickness and width. Under the 2600-2800 m at all aspects, there are many wet point avalanches that have a long road before stopping.
Yesterday reported in the areas most affected by the snowfalls many medium and large avalanches of wet snow: in one case has been affected the roads in the bottom of the valley.
Snow cover.
Much improved snow cover above 2300-2500 m, especially in the valleys of the Gran Paradisowhere you can find large quantities of fresh snow. The snow level between 1700 and 2200 m, at this altitude spring temperatures have already done away the thin layer of snow of recent days. |
