Avalanche danger forecast for
Monday 1/15/2018

AVALANCHE DANGER   Good conditions for backcountry and freeride
Monday 1/15/2018

The danger level is 2-moderate in the whole region.
Good stability in general. Good conditions for backcountry and freeride.

The avalanche problem is wind drifted snow.

Triggered avalanches:
In isolate cases the avalanche triggering is possible for a group of people on very steep/extreme slopes, while it is unlikely for a single person. It's difficult to trigger (technically: poor propensity to propagate the fracture), but the slabs might have large potential thicknesses.
The slabs are located above 2300 m from west-south-west aspects to north up to est-south-est; not only near ridges and hills, but also on the open slopes.
The potentially critical points are the slopes changes and the gullies entries.

Natural avalanches:
spontaneous avalanches are few and smaller in size.
- Sluffs from the rocky bars and road embankments are still possible, especially from the sunniest slopes.
- Below 2200 m possible rare glide avalanches with detachment of the entire snowpack that slides on steep slopes very grassy or rocky.

Trend of the avalanche danger: from Tuesday rising in the west and north-west of the region with the arrival of new snowfall and strong wind.

GENERAL CONDITION
updated to 1/13/2018

Snow amount
Very good on the whole region above 2000 m. Poor/absent under 1300-1500 m.
From Tuesday the snowpack has lost an average of 30-40 cm of thickness.
Curiosity: the large snowfall also brought desert sand. It did not formed a clear layer, but is visible from the yellowish color along the thick inner layer
Snowpack stability
The stability has well improved, above all thanks to the weight of the snow itself and to the drop in temperatures.
It's unlikely that triggered avalanches can involve the entire slope.
Since Tuesday evening, the avalanche activity has been greatly reduced to loose snow sluffs from rocky bar and extremely steep slopes.
The coldest slopes and sheltered from the wind have a surface hoar layer of even thickness 4 cm. From Tuesday, with the new snowfalls, it could be a dangerous weak layer.

Skiability : good
On steep slopes from south to west up to 2400 m there is a freeze crust, also hard, which becomes soft during the day.
Still powder in the north aspects: about 10-20 cm on hard layer.
In the most windy areas the snow is a bit more chalky and alternates, in a small space, with winding layers also hard and load-bearing. With the skis you sink from 10 to 20 cm; without skis to the knee.
